FreeCol, Colonization of America

FreeCol is an open source strategy game, which you can download for free. In the game, your aim is to colonize and conquer the New World with the final goal to claim the independence. The game starts at year 1492, when your ships sail to the unknown. You will have to establish new cities, trade goods to your mother country, with Indians and other Europeans. Wars against Indians and other Europeans seem to be inevitable so you have to build an army too. Towns need management and you can choose what your cities product. Finally there will be time to declare independence, which means hard independence war, where some strategy hints might be very useful.

FreeCol which bases on Colonization game is still a very good turn based strategy game. The game is best at the beginning, but there is a little “slow phase” before you are ready to independence war as your time goes mainly with running several towns daily issues. I tested the game with Vista and it works.

FreeCiv, Civilization of the Earth

FreeCiv is an open source strategy game, which you can download for free. In the game, your objective is to finally send a space ship to the space or alternatively destroy all the opponents on Earth. The game starts 4000BC when your tribe sets up it’s first cities. You will have to search and conquer new land, develop your technology and build your cities. The game is very hard from the beginning but the really good feature in the game is, that you can actually choose different strategies and also different tactics. You can choose to win with technology, diplomacy or pure violence. Each strategy has it’s good and bad features. Also attacks does not have to follow the same pattern every day, but there is a real possibilities to build different attack formations and methods.

Game was tested with Vista and it works fine.

Lincity, building your own ideal town

Lincity is an open source strategy game, where players goal is to build and run on ideal town. You can download the game for free.

Player has to be able to build and set up food supply, mining, industry for jobs, commercial, markets, energy supply, logistics infrastructure, residence areas and city services. Everything has to be in balance or the economics collapse. Besides all this, player has to also develop technology to stay in business.

Player has to manage planning for future need in the beginning of the game. If you build your downtown too full, you’ll face serious problems in the future. It takes some time to learn the features of each building, which is necessary for successful playing.

Game was tested with Vista and it works fine.

The legendary commodore 64 will not die ever. There are several projects related to commodore 64 emulators, and you can play several c64 games with your PC for free.
