Tips for saving bandwidth

A(H1N1) alias Mexico Swine Flu made a huge peak, which is still going on, at my websites Kirnu and Cyberantweb. The number of visitors increased with 1000% in few days. While Cyberantweb with smaller visitor numbers did quite fine, Kirnu runned out of monthly bandwidth in three days. My service provider, Webholder, was kind enough to immediately give me more bandwidth without any costs. But I had to do something about it too, as situation continues.

So I made few things to save my bandwith.

- Click on Cache from Joomla 1.5 global configuration.
- Disable your banners, etc. which are visible on every page, if you can.
- Find out, which article(s) are the most downloaded, and try to remove useful pictures and text. If you have to leave pictures, try to make them smaller.
- Do not publish new articles.

With me, this seems to work, because bandwidth is used less even that visitors numbers keep increasing.

Number of visitors at Cyberantweb explodes

In last two days, the number of visitors at Cyberantweb and Kirnu have raised with 1000%. I like to get visitors, but with Kirnu I’m running out of Monthly Bandwidth Transfer. Luckily the month will change soon and I’m also taking off extra banners and stuff to save bandwidth. I hope it works.

I have once bought a used PC and I saved a lot of money. I bought an old Compaq from the University with 50 € and I used it for three years. Especially in these days, people should consider more carefully, where to invest their money.

When buying used computers, you should first consider, how are you going to use it. If you are going to play the latest games, used computers may not be your choice. But if your are just going to write articles and use web a little bit, you should definitely look for the cheapest PC without any special features.

When you know, what you want, you can start to search you PC. Then the challenge is to know, what is the used computer worth. You definitely don’t want to pay too much for used stuff.

Facebook Sending More Traffic Than Google to Some Sites

Now this is an interesting observation, which I found from my Newsvine group: Facebook Sending More Traffic Than Google to Some Sites

Marketers spend billions to attract search traffic from Google, but late last year Facebook started becoming a bigger source of traffic for some large websites, according to analytics firm Hitwise.

Personally I have observed that a link at Facebook can bring some traffic at your website, even that you share it just with your friends. But the article does not tell the most interesting part: what is the method behind this. How is the link actually shared in Facebook, that it really creates traffic to web sites.

Cyberant Wars’ Ant Wizard is ready

Today I managed to finish my Ant Wizard for Cyberant Wars game. That’s actually quite well, because I draw my first image with PHP no earlier than last Monday. Today I finished the drawing script and learned more about MySql.

Now I’ll have to leave coding for a while and I must concentrate on the game logic, which is not that clear at the moment – even for myself.

Made my first php/MySql application

I just finished my first (working) MySql/PHP database Joomla application: Kirnu’s religion database.

Application has a simple local database mady with MySql and phpMyAdmin. The PHP code is embeded in Joomla articles (includePHP-1.1 plugin needed).

Application has three pages: form to add new religions, religion listing page, and page which writes new religion to database.

The funcionality is simple. User types religions name, gods, founder, description and other information to the form. Then the application writes the religion to the database. Users can take a listing out from database.

Small developement with World Ants game

Last summer I started a project at SourceForge with my own game: World Ants. First week was quite active, but then I faced problems, which were too hard for me to solve. However after few months, I got my interest back and now in three weeks, I have been able to build a simple game architecture. The game is everything else but ready, but now I think that I can proceed with details.

Chosen technologies were MySQL and PHP, which were not familiar to me before this project. But now I’ve learned the basics and I can use database, cookies and I can build simple functions with PHP.

Well, now I do not have to worry, what I will do during my Christmas holiday.

Weekends identified at Kirnu Analytics

It is commonly known fact, that there are more visitors at web pages during working days and less in the weekends. However, there have not been enough traffic at any of my site, that I could have identified this pattern. But now, finally, this can be seen at Kirnu. I just wonder, if I should be satisfied with the fact, or should I try to get more peaks to brake it.
