When you are planning to set up a virtual community platform, you have to consider the technology used with your effort. Drupal has been quite popular open source software, and is used for example at NowPublic. Some companies have built their own content management software, but I’m not skilled enough to do that by myself and I do not have money to hire a programmer(s). After having discussions with other site managers, I have decided to start with Joomla. I was first going to try out Drupal, but I have heard, that it may be hard to figure out, and that may cause problems later.

Joomla is:

Joomla! is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla! is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable.

First I had considered Joomla just as a content management and publishing software, but later I have found out, that it also supports collaboration and community, and it can be used to support community based portals.

And one more thing … My web host’s xpanel has Joomla ready, so I can install it with few clicks.
