I’m not sure, if I ever wanted to run any kind of virtual community at Internet… (Kirnu) Here’s few thoughts related to the subject.
Content
You should decide, what kind kind of content do you want on your site. You should be able to define and inform, what kind of content is wanted at your social news site and what kind of content is not wanted. Your statements represent your values, so it would be a vise idea to define your values first. If you wish to get articles from different cultures, you should be able to live with them too. If you wish to have a web site for certain political group, tell it to the users.
Community
Your web site attracts people. You may like some people. You are likely to get valuable members and “less valuable” members. You may even have to block some members from your community. The value of the members depends on your web site values. If you appreciate traffic, users which bring your traffic are valuable etc.
Control/Moderators
Control mechanisms, including moderators, can be used to support your values and to get and maintain the kind of content and users at your website, which you like to have. Moderators are an important group and should be chosen carefully. Ability to consider, objective behavior and cool mind are good features for moderators. You should avoid choosing moderators, which do not go in line with your web site values. And of course in real World, moderators values will not totally go in line with the social site.
Tolerance
How can you prevent, that someone on the other side of the World, would not accidentally write something, that hurts someone’s feelings on the other side of the World. The answer is, that your cannot. The solution is not to block every possible situation, where someone might be insulted, but to learn to tolerate more.
Censorship
When it’s about free media, nobody wants to be considered as a censurer. Illegal material has to be removed, of course, but how much can you “support” the “quality” and what kind of mechanisms do you use to do that. You can build automatic rules, which will decrease the visibility of articles containing certain content or keywords. But where goes the line between editing and censoring.
At my work with organization’s information, we use security cameras to increase the information security. Server rooms and IT management office spaces are under continuous camera surveillance. But with cameras, there can be huge differences in the quality. And to be honest, poor quality cameras equal to nothing. There is no sense in having cameras, which do not provide clear images, when needed.
IT planet offers state of the art security camera system. At IT planet security camera catalogue you can search different types of security cameras and purchase them, with reasonable price.

Besides security cameras, IT Planet offers discount hardware for businesses including bar code label printers, barcode scanners, touchscreens for POS, security systems.
Google PageRank (PR) seems to be a hot topic all the time. I do not actually know, if PageRanks have been updated recently, but I noticed some changes in two of my blogs this month.
However, Google seems to have started a war against bloggers, who sell links or posts to their blogs. With search engine results and PR, Google has a kind of monopoly in search engine business. Now it can sell search engine results and does not seem to be willing to give others the same change. So Google tries to hunt down blogs, who does not obey “Google’s rules” and then spanks them by dropping the PR. However this is not an easy task for Google and last year Google even managed to spank it’s own Youtube PR, when it’s PageRank falled from 9 to 3.
But if there is an attack, there is always counter measures. And when the opposite is artificial intelligence (search engine algorithm) it is not even that hard to strike back. At ComTech news, there are presented several ways to “attack” against search engine algorithm in article: How to protect your blog from Google and Make more money with Paid Blogging Services. There is no point to rewrite the tips, because they are well written at ComTech news. I’ll just comment, that hiding and misleading are the ways to do the job.
Today I read from news, that Google does not change PRs manually, but only through the algorithm. But it may be, that algorithm may include a black list?
I have not had troubles with my blog and PR, but my PR is quite low anyway. I have not followed the instructions with my blog, but I think I’ll follow ComTech hints with my future blogs and web sites. One reason, that I have not lost my PR may be, that I do not sell links to my blog and there are very few links at my blogroll and linklist.
