Web earnings and taxes

One thing, which always comes with earnings if of course paying taxes. And web earnings do not make a difference. However there are some special features with web earnings.

I’ve established a small business enterprise for my web earnings. With my company, I also do some corporate security planning. I report my web earnings as my company’s earnings. Last December, I made an accounting application with OpenOffice, so now I’m aware all the time, how my business is doing.

Web earnings special features

Local

Web 2.0 industry is quite new, and local bank and tax authorities may not have an experience, how to deal with them. Officers may not have heard about PayPal and are not familiar with different transactions costs, payment buffers and cashing out methods.

Global

I’m living in Euro area, but I do my business in dollars. At the moment dollar is falling and my earnings are slowly disappearing. Following and counting currency changes take some time and rates are changing daily. When your transaction sums are small and you’ll have to do quite much paper work for every payment, you’ll loose interest in small revenue. There is no point doing 20 minutes work for $5, if you’ll have to do 5 minutes accounting work and dollar falling takes 15% out of it.

Reporting earnings

However, I managed to fill my tax form few days ago. There were some challenges, and I’m going to improve my accounting this year. I’ll get the decision at May, so we’ll see how did I do.

I have been web 2.0 enterpriser for very short time, just about a year. With web 2.0 earnings, I mean a little bit different business, than just placing ads on your web site. With web 2.0 enterprising, you are working in a social network and liked it or not, you are using your friends to make money. More friends – more money.

So web 2.0 is not about running your business alone. There are different sites and a lot of different opportunities – some of them are good and some of the are not. Here I have collected my top 5 web 2.0 earning companies, where I have actually made some money.

Everything started with Newsvine. I joined the community and soon realized, that I can actually make some money there by being an active member of the community. Being active means, that you write your own articles, seed interesting news and of course you’ll have to participate to conversations. And by making friends, you are more likely to get more visitors and get better ratings to your articles, which gives you more visibility. During my first year at Newsvine, I managed to make totally $199. That’s not much, but that’s a beginning :-)

PayPerPost and other payed blogging companies, are market places, where bloggers can search for topics to write about and get actually some money by doing that. There are also several other companies, but I chose to write about PPP, because it has bought me about 95% of my blogging earnigns, about $1000 in eight months.

Then about Revver videos. Revver is a company, which pays to it’s members for video views. There are embedded ads and each views, member gets some money. In last few months, Revver has added some features to the site, which support social networking like: commenting, video responses, commenting, improved profile etc. so you can actually see Revver as a social site. With one year and 51 videos, I’ve made $21.58.

At the fourth place, there is an interesting and perhaps a little weird site: Weblo – virtual investment. At Weblo, members can buy the whole World – virtually. I joined Weblo last August and I’m interested to see, how will it go. At the moment there seems to be increasing number of very active members, who do a big work while promoting their sites at Weblo. Weblo has also several features, which support social interaction, like messages, profile, commenting etc. With Weblo, I have actually spend more money than earned, but let’s see, what is the situation at Weblo after a year. At the moment my Weblo earnings are about $4.

Google adsense is not a social site, but about placing ads on your page. I still chose to presented it here, because Adsense earnings sure are related to the number of visitors at your blogs and other sites (where ever you embed the ads). In six months, with 17 292 views, 151 clicks, I have made $38,25. But because $100 is the minimum payed out, I’m still gathering experiences and opinions about Google Adsense and waiting for my first earnings.

There are different sites at Internet, where you can upload your videos for free. One good example is Youtube. I think that’s just great, because now I can share my videos with my friends, and if my PC brakes down, I won’t loose all my stuff. The other question is, which site is best. Youtube is fine, but Revver and Metacafe may even pay you, if people like your video. The question is, which one has better quality. I cannot say, so why don’t you check out and tell your opinion.

Few months ago, I ran into Yahoo Pipes. Yahoo Pipes is a composition tool to gather, manipulate, and mashup content from different web pages.

With Yahoo pipes, you can build a sophisticated output with simple commands. You can:

  • combine many feeds into one, then sort, filter and translate it.
  • geocode your favorite feeds and browse the items on an interactive map.
  • power widgets/badges on your web site.
  • grab the output of any Pipes as RSS, JSON, KML, and other formats
