While living in Internet, I’ve got more familiar with several different social sites, and I though that I should present my favourites. Social sites may have different purposes, like there are social sites concentrating on news, blogging, investment or just interaction between it’s members. I tried to pick my top 5 from different categories. The main criteria was, of course, that the social site must be good at making money or promotion.
Newsvine
On Newsvine members can establish and run own news column, write articles, seed news links and comment on others articles. The best part at Newsvine is, that it actually pays for it’s members for running their column. So you can make money by writing, but not too much. The amount you’ll be payed depends about the popularity of your column.
The best thing about Newsvine is the community. It is easy to make friends and even that some people complain about being teased, I’ve not personally felt that way ever. The reason may be, that my column, Pasi, is not about USA domestic policy, which seems to be the passionate theme on Newsvine.
Bad thing about Newsvine is, that the content is too much about Bush and other American domestic policy stuff.
Weblo
Weblo is a site for Virtual investment. At Weblo you can virtually buy the whole World, which means states, properties, airports and domains. The site is developing all the time, and the latest update game this week. I have not made money at Weblo yet, and seems that the community is still developing. Bigger popularity would do good.
I like the business attitude at the site. People are there to make money. But if Weblo wants to grow, I think there should be other things to provide for it’s members too. At the moment, I’m trying to build my empire in Lapland.
Windows Live Spaces
Windows Live Spaces provides a blog with a package of supporting features, like photo album, friend list etc. The best thing with Live Spaces has been, that I got GoogleRank 3 for my blog in few months. On the other hand, Alexa Ranking does not seem to work with it. Live Spaces is easy to use and quick to learn. At Live Spaces it does not seem to be that easy to make friends. Members are very Global and different languages are supported.
Bad thing is that you don’t seem to be able to comment anonymous and registration is required. Site also uploads slowly, so don’t collect every possible gadget at your own space. After few months use, I personally cut off several gadgets from my blog, 2. Space.
Digg
Digg is another social news site, but you cannot write your own articles and make money with it. On Digg, you can seed news links and search interesting links to read. I think that, with technology news, the Digg is the best site.
The reason, why Digg is on my list, is that last month update brought new features, like better user profile, link list and “shouting”.
I have not been able to make real friends, but perhaps this comes easier with new features.
Facebook seems to be quite much just about social interaction. You can meet new people, but now the site seems to be mostly about searching and connecting with your old ones. I was invited to Facebook by my friend from Africa, and we keep in touch between Facebook. But all my connections after that, have been my old friends from real life. I have not identified the greatness of Facebook yet, which may be because the low level of activity at the site.
There is a lot of different “small features” like writing wall, post cards and different kinds of gifts and the future of the Facebook seems interesting at the moment. So it earns the fifth place at my list.

I wasn’t aware these were the top sites, although its not surprising since the quality maintained on these sites are up to par. Thanks for this!
2 MySpace vs Orkut // Feb 23, 2008 at 1:20 pm
There are many social networking services operated like http://www.orkut.com, http://www.myspace.com, http://www.facebook.com etc. Orkut.com is being operated by http://www.google.com. MySpace is an online community that lets you meet your friends’ friends. These are popular sites especially among youths. We can judge the popularity of these sites by seeing their ranking in http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa. Orkut has been steadily rising on the Alexa charts but MySpace is still significantly bigger than Orkut.com.
